5to Cuento Sin Final: Se Busca Amigos

Ramón no entiende.

5th Story without and Ending: Looking For Friends

As I mentioned in my last post, I went on vacation with my family and that kept me a little away from the blog. Also, I’m at the final stages of a new and exiting new project that is demanding much of my time. However, I am not giving up my beloved blog that fills me with so much satisfaction.
Top of Form

So, let’s continue with the stories without an ending.

Today, I bring a story from the underwater world. It may seem crazy but my inspiration has been Michael Phelps. While watching him swimming during the last Olympic Games in London, I was impressed by his speed. Also, his big smile caught my attention. So, one night in which my imagination was flying, I gave birth to Ramón the Shark. I hope you enjoy this new story and please send endings for this new adventure. We will name the winner to the funniest ending on September 21st and we will award the Spanish version of the picture book, El Loro Tico Tango, by Anna Witte. A book that both my kids and I like a lot.

Looking for Friends

Ramón, the shark, is a famous swimmer. Every body at sea knows him for his speed and agility in the water. While it is admired by many, when the sound of the waves announces its closeness, all fish, dolphins, penguins and turtles swim away to hide behind the anemones and marine plants.

Poor Ramón!

He tried and tried to be liked by the creatures in the underwater world, but all he gets is rejection.
He always arrives with his best smile; he opens his mouth and let its 300 teeth shine. However, nobody gets that he is trying to be friendly, so he just gets screams in horror and every body fleeing desperately. Poor Ramón, he remains lonely, watching everyone else swimming away  from him. The few times he tried chasing someone, he scared them further away.

Ramon doesn’t understand what’s going on. He thought that it may have been his breath, but then he figured out it couldn’t be that as he had tried with several different tooth pastes, Even the one that smells like Jazmines.

Ramon is desperate to have friends.

How can Ramón the shark make new friends?

Hispanic Have Every Day a More Important Role in the Education System in the U.S.

Hispanics now are the largest minority group on the nation's four-year college campuses,
according to an analysis of newly available U.S. Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center. For the first time, the number of 18- to 24-year-old Hispanics enrolled in college exceeded 2 million and reached a record 16.5% share of all college enrollments. Hispanics are the largest minority group on the nation's college campuses----four-year and two-year combined----a milestone first achieved in 2010.

In the nation's public schools, Hispanics also reached new milestones. For the first time, one-in-four (24.7%) public elementary school students is Hispanic. Among all pre-K through 12th grade U.S. public school students, a record 23.9% were Hispanic in 2011.

In both cases, rapid Hispanic population growth has played a role in driving Hispanic student enrollment gains over the past four decades. However, population growth alone does not explain all the enrollment gains made by Hispanic students in recent years. Today, with record high school completion rates, more young Hispanics than ever are eligible to attend college. And among these high school completers, a record share----nearly half (46%)----is enrolled in a two-year or four-year college.

Hispanics are the nation's largest minority group, making up more than 50 million, or 16.5%, of the U.S. population. Among the 30 million young people ages 18 to 24, 6 million, or 20%, are Hispanic.

In addition to gains in enrollment, the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic college students has also reached new highs. In 2010, 140,000 bachelor's degrees and 112,000 associate degrees were awarded to Hispanics. In both cases, Hispanics are a growing share of all degree recipients----13.2% among those with an associate degree and 8.5% among those who received a bachelor's degree in 2010. Despite these gains, the Hispanic share among degree recipients significantly lagged their share among 18- to 24-year-old students enrolled in two-year colleges (21.7%) and four-year colleges and universities (11.7%) in 2010.

This  means more and better job opportunities for Hispanics and access to better salaries.

Education is the best gift we can give our child. Once it enters their system, nobody could get it from them.

I support a better, more complete and bilingual education. How about you?

Saludos,
Silvina

Winner of The Story: Cookies Don't Go To The Zoo

I  wanted to apologize for not announcing the winner of this story before. The truth is that first, I wanted to give you a more time to submit more endings, and two I went with my kids on vacation. I was so connected to them, that I disconnected a lit bit from the blog.

The story Cookies Don't Go To The Zoo it is very special for me, because it is the first story I wrote when I started writing again. At that time, I enrolled in a Literary Workshop at Gotham Writers in New York City, and I had to submit a story for kids using all the techniques  I had learned in class. Though the original version of Cookies Don’t Go To The Zoo is a little longer, here I published a shorter adaptation because I thought it was more suitable to the purpose of this contest.

Now, Cata who is 6 years old has submitted an ending to this story that I really liked because it shows the importance of having loyal friends. In her ending, Mimi’s best friend, Sofi, ends up sharing her cookies with her friend Mimi.

Congratulations Cata on an excellent job. Your ending is full of positive energy. Now, I need that your parents get in touch with me so I can send you your price.

Saludos,
Silvina

Book Recommendation: The Parrot Tico Tango

The publishing house Barefoot Books is famous for publishing high quality children books. Their stories, as well as their illustrations are considered to be among the best in the  children literature market.

Last week, I was looking for books for my Spanish classes, and I found one that I really liked: The Parrot Tico Tango (El Loro Tico Tango)

It is the story of a parrot, Tico Tango, who takes fruits from the other animals in the rainforest until his beak can hold no more.

The story starts with the following verse:

The parrot Tico Tango
Had a round, yellow mango

But it wasn’t quite as yellow
As the lemon of Marcello.

And Tico Tango knew
That he had to have it too,
So he took it!

The author, Anna Witte,  wrote a perfect introduction. In the first pages, kids already know what the story is about. The story is written in cumulative rhymes, so verses get longer as the story progresses. The vocabulary is simple, and in each page, the author introduces different fruits and colors. This is an excellent text to practice and learn Spanish.

Both of my kids enjoyed reading this story. They liked it so much, that for the past week we have been reading it every night before going to bed.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as we did.

Saludos,

Bonus of the post: Last weekend I went to the movies with my kids to see Disney’s new movie: Brave. It is a movie for the entire family. Not only it is not aggressive, but also, it is a current theme that could generate those teachable moments that sometimes we look for and cannot find.
