Por que ser bilingues

Que nuestros chiquitos mantengan el idioma español es para mi, una cuestión no solo cultural sino también sentimental.

Quiero que mis hijos puedan identificarse con ser Argentinos. Quiero que entiendan el valor del dulce de leche y los alfajores. Que puedan usar la camiseta celeste y blanca con sentimiento de propia y no como una imposición de mama y papa. Quiero que de grandes puedan emocionarse al escuchar un tango y que el asado no sea solo una variedad mas en el menú.

Quiero sentirme en casa al hablar con mis hijos. No quiero tener que entender lo que me están diciendo, quiero una charla directa.

Quiero que puedan tener una conversación espontánea con sus abuelos, que puedan jugar a la mancha y a las escondidas cuando visitan a sus primos en Argentina, y que les resulte natural cantar el “Que los cumplas feliz.”

Es por eso que hago el esfuerzo de exigirles el español; es por eso que aun siendo tarde, leemos aunque sea unas paginas de algún cuento en español.  Mas adelante también, empezaremos a escribir la lista del supermercado en español. Como me dijo una amiga, a quien yo quiero mucho, por que dejar que pierdan algo que es bueno,  como es la posibilidad de ser bilingües.

Gente, si no les toque el corazoncito, al menos háganlo porque los datos del censo que se realizo en Estados Unidos en el año 2010, arroja números muy importantes para nosotros, los Hispanos.

Hoy somos 50.5 millones de hispanos viviendo en Estados Unidos, cifra que representa el 16% del total de la población y nos convierte en la minoría mas grande. Se estima que para el año 2050, los hispanos vamos a representar aproximadamente el 25% del total de la población.

Imagínense el shock cultural que eso implica. Hasta el presidente Barack Obama reconoció que el futuro de este país, esta directamente relacionado al futuro de la comunidad hispana. 

En Abril de este año, la Casa Blanca publico una iniciativa para mejorar el nivel académico de los estudiantes hispanos,  (“White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics”) ya que los estudiantes de nuestra comunidad tienen el menor nivel de consecución académico del país.

Ojo, que también es importante que no dejen de lado el idioma ingles. Yo abogo por chicos bilingües, y vos?

That my children can speak Spanish, is for me both, a cultural and a sentimental matter.

I want my kids to be able to feel identified with Argentina. I want them to crave for dulce de leche and alfajores.  I want them to really want to wear the Argentinean jersey and not just because mom and dad asked them to. When older, I want them to be moved when listening to a tango. Also, I want them to understand that barbecue is not just another option in the menu.

I want to feel comfortable when talking to my kids. I want a direct chat, with no translations.

I want them to be able to have a fluid conversation with their grandparents, and to play hide-and-seek with their cousins in Argentina, and to sing happy birthday in Spanish naturally.

That is why I force them to learn Spanish, and even when it is late I read to them at least some pages in Spanish.  In the near future, we will start writing the groceries’ list in Spanish too. 

As a friend of mine, whom I really love, told me, there is no reason to let them lose something that is good for them, like the possibility of being bilingual.

People If didn’t get to your hearts with my humble words, then at least do it because the census, that was carried out in the United States during 2010, reveals very important results for us the Hispanic people.

Today there are 50.5 millions Hispanic people living in the US, this figure represents 16% of the total population and makes us the bigger minority. It is expected that by 2050 we, the Hispanics, are going to represent the 25% of the population.

Imagine the cultural shock that this means. Even the President, Barack Obama, admitted that this country’s future is directly related to the Hispanic community’s future.

In April the White House published a program to improve the academic level of the Hispanic people (White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic) because our community has the lowest level of academic attainment.

Be careful, it is also important for them not to abandon the English language. I appeal for bilingual kids. Do you?
