Si bien me gusta recomendarles libros en español, hoy les traigo una
propuesta en inglés, con tono hispano. Son dos libros de un autor nacido en
México y criado entre México y Estados Unidos, graduado de la Universidad de
Parsons, donde estudió escritura e ilustración. Les presento a Duncan Tonatiuh.
En la historia, contada a través de cartas que se envían dos primos, el
autor nos muestra la vida del México rural en contraposición con la vida urbana
de la ciudad americana. El libro nos enseña que a pesar de las diferencias
arquitectónicas, gastronómicas y de costumbres diarias, los protagonistas
tienen vidas similares, porque al final del día todos somos iguales, seres humanos.
Yo lo leí junto a mi hija de seis años luego de haber ido a la
exposición de Diego Rivera en el Moma. Gracias a la simpleza de las palabras de
esta narración, ella pudo aprender más acerca de la vida del pintor y entender un
poco en que se inspiraba. Este es un libro ampliamente recomendable para
familias que estén interesadas en enseñar a sus niños sobre arte y cultura
hispana.
Ojala Duncan siga publicando libros con tanta calidad artística.

An Author to Follow: Duncan Tonatiuh
Even though I like recommending books in Spanish, today I bring a
different proposal, books in English, but with a Hispanic style. The author was
born in Mexico but he was raised in both Mexico and United States. He graduated
from the University of Parson, where he studied writing and illustration:
Duncan Tonatiuh.
His first book is called " Dear Primo, A Letter to my
Cousin". This book was awarded with the famous Pura Belpré because of its
beautiful and original illustrations, inspired by ancient Mexican culture. Its
pages are full of colored images drawed in basic lines with simple details and
indigenous touches.
In the history, told through letters sent by two cousins, the
author shows us the life of the rural Mexico in contrast with the urban life of
the American city. The book teaches us that beside architectonic, gastronomic and
daily routines, both protagonists have similar lives because at the end of the
day we are all the same: human beings.
The second book is called "Diego Rivera, His World and
Ours", in which in a simple way, the author tells us the story of the
famous artist’s life. In addition, through his illustrations the author
imagines how Diego would paint the reality of nowadays. The art in this book
follows the line of the first book.
After having visited the exposition of Diego Rivera at MOMA, I
read it with my six year-old daughter. Thanks to the simplicity of
this narration, she was able to learn more about the painter’s life, and
understand what had inspired him. This is a book highly recommended for
families that are interested in teaching their children about Hispanic art and
culture.
I hope Duncan continues publishing books with such artistic
quality so we can enjoy them.
