Hoy quiero hacer una pequeña pausa y dejar de
lado el tema de bilingüismo, para contarles acerca de un libro que leí. Es un
libro para mujeres escrito por dos profesionales hispanas que viven en los
Estados Unidos. Ambas autoras, la Dra Rosa María Gil y la Dra Carmen Inoa
Vazquez, han dedicado sus carreras profesionales a ayudar a personas de origen
hispano a lograr una mejor calidad de vida en los Estados Unidos.
El libro se llama “La Paradoja de María” y
cuenta como una mujer latina, criada con valores tradicionales donde los roles
están determinados por el sexo de la persona, piensa y actúa cuando se enfrenta con la sociedad americana.
Las autoras analizan el comportamiento de la
mujer marianista, quien llevada por
su sentido de responsabilidad y servicio hacia los demás, sacrifica todos sus
sueños y ambiciones. Quien se considere una marianista
tiene mucho que aprender de este libro, ya que provee información y consejos
que apuntan a poder integrar las demandas de dos culturas tan diferentes. Las
páginas del libro están llenas de historias reales que se convierten en casos
de estudios con el objetivo de mostrarle al lector como confrontar la realidad.
El libro fue bien recibido en el ambiente
profesional y desde su publicación en el año 1996, ha inspirado numerosas
investigaciones en diferentes
universidades del país.
A mí la teoría
marianista me ha parecido sumamente interesante. Sin embargo, creo que por
suerte las cosas están cambiando. Las nuevas generaciones de mujeres hispanas fuimos
criadas para que estudiemos y busquemos nuestros horizontes, para que tengamos
una carrera profesional y que luchemos por alcanzar nuestros sueños. Sé que aún
existe una presión muy fuerte para que encontremos un hombre, formemos pareja y
constituyamos una familia. Si bien el feminismo ha roto las cadenas que nos
mantuvieron esclavas en nuestras casas durante siglos, también en parte sólo
nos ha agregado mas responsabilidades porque la sociedad aún asume que la mujeres
somos el “alma del hogar” y
cuando hay una falla en esa
unidad, es a nosotras a quien se culpa. Y ese, al menos creo yo, es uno de los
principales motivos por los cuales las mujeres de hoy continúan sacrificándose.
En conclusión, le recomiendo este libro a la
mujer marianista de cualquier
nacionalidad que lucha por encontrar un lugar en el mundo de hoy, donde
queremos ser madres, esposas, tener una profesión, lucir bien y disfrutar de la
vida. Si consideras que eres una mujer marianista,
entonces debes saber que el cambio no va a ser fácil ya que deberás
redescubrirte y convertirte en una nueva persona.

Today, I want to make a small pause
on bilingualism because I want to tell you about a book I read. It is a book
for women written by two successful Hispanic professionals living in the United
States. Both authors, Dr Rosa Maria Gil and Dr Carmen Inoa Vazquez, through
their jobs, or in their private practices as psychotherapists, have dedicated
their carriers to help Hispanic people achieve a better life in the US.
The title of the book is “The Maria
Paradox” and it has been in print since 1996. It has inspired numerous research projects in different
universities throughout the nation, because the authors provide inside
information on how a Latina raised with traditional values and with gender
roles thinks and acts when trying to survive in the US culture. The authors have studied the
behavior of a marianista, a woman whose sense of duty and
responsibility toward others ends up making her sacrifice her own needs.
If you are a marianista,
you will learn how to deal with your struggles, as it provides useful
tips aimed to integrate the demands of both cultures. Pages are filled with
real-life stories that become case studies to explain the readers how to
confront reality.
I liked the marianista theory
presented in the book. However, I think today things are starting to change in
our culture too. New generations of Hispanic women are being encouraged to
study, have a profession, and pursue their dreams. Yes, I do believe
there is still a huge pressure to find a husband and start a family. Feminism
has broken the chains that had kept us all locked in our homes for centuries.
However, it only added us responsibilities because society still sees women as
the souls of their homes. And if there’s failure at home, then it is the wife
to blame. And I think that’s the main reason behind the sacrifices that today
women make everyday.
So, it is a book that I definitely
recommend to any marianista woman,
from any nationality that struggles to find a place in the current world, where
we want to be mothers, wives, professionals, want to look good and enjoy
life. But, you have to know that the change is not going to be easy since you
will have to go through a process of rediscovering yourself again and becoming
a new person.
