Instituto Cervantes, Manhattan, NY
Little Language League, Westchester, NY
Lets Play In Spanish, Bay Area, CA
Escuela Argentina , Potomac, MD
Taller Latino, Manhattan NY
Language Workshop for Children,  FL, NY, NJ, MI, NC

Spanish Schools in the US

Every day more people in United States are interested in Spanish as a language. Today seeing banners in public places and books in libraries and book-stores written in Spanish is more and more common. Even being able to speak Spanish is a very solicited skill among new jobs. I think this is due to the increasing Hispanic population in the United States.

Many American families hire Hispanic nannies for their children to be exposed to Spanish, while other families choose more formal alternatives like tutors, private lessons or schools that offer an official curriculum in Spanish.  There’s a variety of choices for us to help our children. Below I will tell you about some of them.

In Hoboken, New Jersey, a public school, The Hoboken Dual Language Charter SchoolHola, opened its door offering an Elementary program in Spanish.

Other states also have an increasing amount of institutions offering different programs for languages learning.  Here in Connecticut, The Greenwich Spanish School (GSS) opened its doors three years ago. This school today offers the following programs.

-       Pre-school: A program for kids between ages 3 and 4.
-       After: Activities for after regular school for kids between ages 5 and 10 years old.
-       Homework Clubs: Programs for kids between 11 and 14 years old.

Days ago I had the opportunity to interview the director and founder of the school, Mrs. Rosario Brooks. She told me she had founded GSS with the objective of helping those who wanted to raise bilingual children, since as a mother she didn't find a place where her children could expand their knowledge of Spanish.

Most of the kids enrolled in GSS are americans. In my opinion this responds to the fact that hispanic families don’t have the need of attending a bilingual pre-school if they speakspanish at home. However, I do think it is an excellent choice for mixed marriages; and the after programs take away from us the task and resposibility of teaching our kids to read and write in Spanish.
There are also other options for learning from home like the site Glovico.com that offers languages lessons via Skype.  This seems like such an innovating. This company was a finalist on the DellChallenge.

If you do some online research you will find many more choices. Below I included a list with interesting proposals:

Instituto Cervantes, Manhattan, NY
Little Language League, Westchester, NY
Lets Play In Spanish, Bay Area, CA
Escuela Argentina, Potomac, MD
Taller Latino, Manhattan NY
Chi Ce La Cu, VA
Language Workshop for Children,  FL, NY, NJ, MI, NC

He visto  muchos casos exitosos.

Interview With One of the Authors of the Book The Maria Paradox

I had the chance to communicate with one of the authors of this book, Dr Carmen Inoa Vazquez, Ph.D. I've sent her 7 questions through her literary agent, and she responded back to me. Below, please find her answers.

1 – Can you describe the Hispanic Woman?  What made you write about us?
The Hispanic woman is a combination of the traditional and the modern. She wants to maintain the many positive values of her ancestors, but also wants to be a participant in today’s world.  She still faces the transition of maintaining the Latino values, but choosing without anxiety and realizing that doing so does not imply losing the self. What brings me to the point of responding to why write about us?  It is because we are not only pioneers in many ways, but the bridge between our grandmothers, mothers,  and our sons and daughters.  We feel that sharing these experiences with each other gives us a sense of support and sisterhood.  The feeling of not being alone in the process.

2 – Can you describe in few words the marianista woman?
The marianista woman is one whose sense of duty and responsibility toward others ends up making her sacrifice her own needs.
Do you feel that marianista theory is only applicable in Latin America?
No, I do not feel that marianista theory is only applicable in Latin America.  It is applicable to many women in other societies in the world, including women who live here in the United States. That is, it is applicable to many Latinas and non-Latinas.

3 -  I see that some statistics included in the book are not current.  When was The María Paradox written?
Yes, indeed we need to update the numbers of Latinos living in the United States.  However an increase in numbers have not diluted in any way the message of our book.  This book was first published in English in 1996 and 2002.  The Spanish translation was published in 2002.  And now keeping up with the times we have the e-book format, which came out in 2012.   However, it is important to note that clinically the concepts of marianismo and machismo have not changed significantly and the message of the book is as relevant today as when originally published in 1996.
What we also know is that within the Latin American population living in the United States, Latinas still feel the principles of marianismo with great intensity particularly when experiencing the transition from old world to modernity.  It is important to know when and how to make choices based on our own needs.  It is important to know that some of the choices made by a Latina woman living in the United States might redefine bonds with parents and other significant people, as such understanding and dealing with marianista values require making adjustment in the way many Latinas function.
This book has inspired numerous research projects in different universities throughout the nation, including dissertations and thesis and other important essays focusing on women issues.  The book has been very well received in graduate courses addressing women needs, and we are told that it is still considered a classic.  We believe this is due to the still prevalent and relevance of marianismo and machismo for Latinas and Latinos.  We believe it is still very relevant.

4 -  In the recent years there has been a Latino boom in the US. Today, you see Hispanic celebrities and even politicians in the news.  How is this affecting the acculturation process for current Hispanics?
There is no question that having role models that look like us helps, but the acculturation process is very complex and includes different psychological aspects and interactional levels with families and significant others.  This means that there are still many aspects of the psychology of women that deserve attention and require a continuous understanding of the dynamics of adaptation to the North American culture.

5 -  When I travel to Latin American countries,  I notice a North American influence there.  What do you think about that?
I think that we will have to be in the same page in terms of describing what is considered North American influence.  Perhaps modern women are more open about their sexuality or how they choose to go about their partners, their choices of careers, and other important choices of their lives, etc., but there is still a need to understand the impact of the Latino values and it will still take conscious efforts to eradicate some of the traditional marianistas and machista concepts, or to let go of the psychologically important values of the Latino culture.

6 - Do you believe kids living with Hispanic values but raised in the United States struggle with identity issues?  How can we help our kids?
Definitely, many kids living with Hispanic values, but raised in the United States struggle with identity issues, but this does not have to be the case.  In my work with those kids, I always remind them and their parents that we have a very rich heritage worth balancing with the culture of the United States.  They need to know who are and be aware with pride of the Latino accomplishments as a group and the culture of their parents.  They need to have knowledge of who are our Latino heroes; they need to go to the museums to see our art.  Recently there was a marvelous exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art featuring Diego Rivera.  We now have several judges, authors and accomplished people that are Latinos and who have thrived and are quite proud of their two identities.  They actually can function quite well in these two worlds.  This must be taught at home.  It is the parents who must be the role models showing pride in the Latino culture but, of course, also opening up to the cultural values that their children are now also part of.  I repeat, this is something that must be presented with pride at the home since the parents will be the role models and the teachers. The parents must respect each other, value the girls and teach the boys what is the meaning of respeto to themselves and others.

7 -  Is it possible for our kids to have a double identity?  Or do we need to come up with a customized identity in which they can live in both cultures?
Look, as stated in item 6, families can teach their children how to navigate their two worlds.  I have seen this applied with great success.  There is no need to customize an identity.  The children are part of the modern worlds in the United States or other parts of the world where they may live and which may be different than their parents or grandparents, but if they are taught with pride and are shown the achievements, struggles and success of their ancestors, and the fundamental values of their two cultures including how to be independent thinkers, to understand the reasons certain behaviors are not allowed and this is done within a continuing dialogue format – then being a person with Latino heritage and being part of the United States is not only very possible, but desirable.  I teach parents how to apply these very important concepts aimed to balance the two cultures.  In fact, I published a book Parenting With Pride Latino Style.  This book was based on the many questions posed by readers of the Maria Paradox on how to help their children navigate their two cultures.

Adult Book:   The Maria Paradox

Today, I want to make a small pause on bilingualism because I want to tell you about a book I read. It is a book for women written by two successful Hispanic professionals living in the United States. Both authors, Dr Rosa Maria Gil and Dr Carmen Inoa Vazquez, through their jobs, or in their private practices as psychotherapists, have dedicated their carriers to help Hispanic people achieve a better life in the US.

The title of the book is “The Maria Paradox” and it has been in print since 1996. It has inspired numerous research projects in different universities throughout the nation, because the authors provide inside information on how a Latina raised with traditional values and with gender roles thinks and acts when trying to survive in the US culture. The authors have studied the behavior of a marianista, a woman whose sense of duty and responsibility toward others ends up making her sacrifice her own needs.  If you are a marianista, you will learn how to deal with your struggles, as it provides useful tips aimed to integrate the demands of both cultures. Pages are filled with real-life stories that become case studies to explain the readers how to confront reality.

I liked the marianista theory presented in the book. However, I think today things are starting to change in our culture too. New generations of Hispanic women are being encouraged to study, have a profession, and pursue their dreams. Yes, I do believe there is still a huge pressure to find a husband and start a family. Feminism has broken the chains that had kept us all locked in our homes for centuries. However, it only added us responsibilities because society still sees women as the souls of their homes. And if there’s failure at home, then it is the wife to blame. And I think that’s the main reason behind the sacrifices that today women make everyday.

So, it is a book that I definitely recommend to any marianista woman, from any nationality that struggles to find a place in the current world, where we want to be mothers, wives, professionals, want to look good and enjoy life. But, you have to know that the change is not going to be easy since you will have to go through a process of rediscovering yourself again and becoming a new person.

You can buy the book at amazon.com. Additionally,  to keep up with the new times, the authors are launching their book in an electronic format with the publishing house Premier Digital Publishing. You can buy it here:  http://bit.ly/yDClFm. Or, if you want more information, you can click here http://www.facebook.com/MariaParadox)—where you can read an exclusive excerpt—and on Twitter https://twitter.com/#!/TheMariaParadox
