Español vs. Castellano

Nunca me referí a mi idioma como el español. Para mi, yo siempre hablé en castellano. Sin embargo, cuando me mudé a los Estados Unidos todos se referían a mi idioma como Spanish. Por eso cambié su nombre y yo empecé a hablar en español.

Días atrás estaba pensando en el blog y me pregunté cual seria el término correcto.

Hice un poco de investigación online, y lo que encontré es que básicamente el idioma español y el castellano son de verdad el mismo idioma. Ahora bien, en España generalmente consideran que hablan castellano, debido a que fue la lengua utilizada durante los tiempos medievales en Castilla, pero que en Latinoamérica se habla español.

Pero tampoco podemos simplificarlo tanto, debido a que en distintos países de habla hispana, la misma palabra puede tener distintos significados. ¿Quién no ha dicho alguna barbaridad o algo que no tiene sentido a un hispano parlatante pero de  distinto origen? Yo como choclo, en Perú comen helote. Yo me tiro a la pileta, en México se tiran a la alberca. Igual nos comunicamos y nos hacemos entender, pero imaginen el desafío que tienen nuestros hijos. Yo a mis chicos les enseño el español que yo hablo y con mi pronunciación. ¿Y ustedes que hacen?

Vamos ponganle presión a sus hijos, hoy el español después del chino mandarín, y el inglés es la lengua más hablada del mundo por el número de personas que la tienen como lengua materna, contando a los hispanos que viven en Estados Unidos.

Para terminar, como datos interesantes, yo diría que es importante saber que nuestro idioma es una lengua romance, que deriva del latín, que tiene influencias germánicas y árabes, que fue aceptado por la España medieval como idioma oficial, y que hoy en día lo regula La Real Academia Española.

Spanish vs. Castillian

I never said I spoke in Spanish. I always called it Castilian. However, when I moved to the Unites States, I realized here they called it Spanish.  That’s why I started referring to it as Spanish.

A few days ago, I was thinking of the blog and I’ve wondered which word would be the correct one. I researched in the web and found that Spanish and Castilian are basically the same language. Now, in Spain they consider they speak in Castilian because it was the medieval language spoke in Castilla, and that we in Latin America speak in Spanish. However, it is not as easy as it sounds because the same word could have different meanings across Latin American countries.

Who have never said something horrible to a Hispanic person from another country? I eat choclo, in Perú they eat helote. I enjoy the pileta, in Mexico they enjoy the alberca. However, we can communicate and be understood, but imagine how challenging it is for our kids. I teach to my kids the Spanish I talk, and with my pronunciation. How about you?

Let’s put some pressure on our kids. Today, Spanish, is the third most spoken language, after English and Chinese Mandarin. All these considering Hispanic people who live the United States and Spanish is their primary language.

Now to finish this post, I think it is important to know that our language is a romance language, that derives from Latin, that has Germanic and Arabic influences, that was accepted by the Medieval Spain as an official language, and that the RAE (Spanish Real Academy) regulates it.
